Ceramics Classes at Maryland Hall

Our ceramics and pottery program is one of our most thriving education programs. Our expansive studio provides the perfect environment, tools and materials needed to work in clay. Our Teaching Artists take care to offer a robust schedule of classes each semester that include one-time workshops to "just try it" and classes that guide you through all aspects of ceramic art: handbuilding, wheel, glazing and more. There are also open studio opportunities for registered students. Taking a ceramics class with us welcomes you into a supportive community of ceramicists, each on their own clay journey. Classes are offered for children, teens and adults.

Find your zen at the pottery wheel this winter! Students will learn the beautiful, meditative nature of the ancient craft of throwing on the potter’s wheel. We’ll work on technique and create simple, foundational forms like cups and bowls. We’ll learn about what makes a pot aesthetically pleasing in form and surface design, and how to evoke personal expression through clay. We will create our own pieces from start to finish, and learn all about the alchemy of what happens to clay when fired, glazed, and fired again. This course is suitable for individuals with novice to some throwing experience. While beginners will focus on centering the clay and making the simple forms that create the foundation for all other pieces, experienced students will have more complicated challenges to keep honing their skills. Students should bring a towel, wear clothes that can get a little dirt on them and tie hair back. A $30 materials fee is due during the first class, which will cover the first 25lbs of clay and glazes.Additional studio time is available for registered students in this class - check the Open Studio-Monday, Open Studio-Wednesday, Open Studio -Saturday or a package of all three options.

Musical instruments have helped us to communicate and express ourselves since the dawn of human culture. Learning to build and play our own musical instruments slows us down, connects us to our bodies and to our self-expression, and helps us to connect with a sense of wonder, curiosity and play.  In this 4 session workshop we will get an introduction to musical instruments that have been made across Central and South America for thousands of years and learn to build our own clay flutes using ancient pottery-making techniques.  At the end of the course we will learn to explore and play our own unique instruments.  All are welcome, and no previous experience with clay, instruments or music is necessary.  Everyone can enjoy turning mud into music! See student pricing for 13-18 year olds.  A materials fee of $10 is due to Maryland Hall Pottery at the first class. Contact the instructor with any questions at melissahfoss@gmail.com. No class on Jan 28 while ocarina are kiln fired. The last day will be in a quiet "zen" room 205 for learning to play your Ocarina.
