Drawing Classes at Maryland Hall
Drawing provides a variety of benefits to our overall well-being including decreased stress, improved creativity, and stronger critical thinking skills. Every semester, our Teaching Artists offer a variety of drawing classes using different mediums for beginners to experienced drawers. Draw from a live model in a figure or portrait drawing class, take your sketch pad outside in an urban sketch class or start from the foundations of drawing in a new virtual class.

Think you can't draw? It can be learned. Students will go through a series of exercises, designed to open their eyes to the world of drawing. Later, working with charcoal, students learn to how to see and organize with shapes and tone. Line, value, positive/negative space, proportion and perspective are covered. This workshop starts with techniques and materials commonly used by professional artists. Each day we will work with a new material including assorted drawing pencils, charcoals, erasers, papers, and oil pastels. Subject matter will include animals, human faces and forms, still life settings, and landscapes. Techniques will include enlarging and reducing images, line, form, light and shadow, volume, through value studies. Students will have class time to draw subjects of their choice, using the techniques covered in class. Please bring several photos and items to class with you on the first day of things that you would like to draw. This can include objects such as photos, action figures, animated figures, or just ideas that you would like to put on paper. A materials fee of $45 is due to the Instructor the first day of class, cash only, please, (this fee covers everything we will use in class). This class is for beginners to intermediate level student. Students attending Jr. Drawing, Painting, may stay through the supervised breaks for lunch/snack time between classes for a fee of $5 per student, per supervised break, per day. Comic books, graphic novels, and concept art abound in this week-long camp. Your young artist will learn to think, draw, and ink like an illustrator -- designing works of art around their favorite stories or their own narratives. Students may work in whatever style they wish, but will be encouraged to further their artistic growth with new materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, and other forms of wet media. Storytellers, video game lovers, anime fans, and fine artists alike will love this camp, as they get to learn what it's like to design posters, book covers, games, comics, and more. Discover three kinds of clay in this new sculpture camp. Projects will include student-designed mugs, vessels, creatures and more! This new summer workshop will give the students a chance to start with drawing materials to set up a still life, landscape, or favorite animal from photos or objects from home. We will then work on a painting in Acrylics to finish out the class. All drawings and the painting will go home the last day of class. Students may bring photos, (no portraits please), favorite stuffed animal, a book , action figures, farm animals, dragons, dinnosaurs, favorite toy, dance shoes , flowers from your garden etc. Students may bring a snack and a drink to class. This new class will offer Students from 9-14 years old a chance to study their subject using pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal. These drawings will help them plan out an Acrylic painting of their choice of subject matter. This new Workshop is forTeens and Adults. We will start with drawing scetches for your painting, using pencil, charcoal and watercolor pencils. This class inspires children to discover new ways of drawing everyday subjects. We will explore the differences between 2D and 3D objects, natural lighting from sunny to cloudy days, how to make fruit look like fruit and not a vegetable and how to draw humans and animals of all sorts. This class will include techniques for pencil, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil. A materials fee of $35 is due to the instructor at the first day (this fee covers a drawing pencil set, oil pastels, charcoal, a sketch pad, and class supplies). All student artwork will go home on the last day. This is not your traditional drawing class. Many students get caught up trying to duplicate a photo, a realistic bowl of fruit or a portrait mirror image. This class will loosen the strings and set aside the rules of drawing. We will work with numerous subjects, pencil charcoal, water color pencils, oil pastels, inks, metallics and numerous papers and surfaces. We will cover 1-2 techniques per class.There is a materials fee of $45, cash only, please, that will cover everything you need and payable at the first class. Learners will explore multiple ways of creating a moving image. Watch in amazement as your artful drawings come to life through stop-motion clay-mation, and hand-drawn animation. Students may work both individually or collaboratively, and will be provided a camera and tripod to create their work. All artists will take home a digital compilation of all their works at the end of the course. This camp features new and challenging projects for returning students. Take your illustration skills to the next level in this camp all about the art of inking. Students will explore both watercolor brush markers and alcohol-based markers, in addition to illustration pens to create richly detailed illustrations of their own choosing. We will focus on the skills of blending, shading, and creating varied line weight to enrich our drawings. The Drawing and Painting class will cover basic techniques for Students to draw their subjects and then paint them the same day. This excercise helps students with color work, mediums, subjects, sizing and brushwork. We will be using a new subject each day tba.
