Andrea’s professional career in Fine Art began soon after she graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Art with a BFA in Painting, minoring in Drawing, Sculpture and Textiles. Opening a textile supply store and Gallery in Iowa City, Ia., she and a colleague began teaching Fiber Arts classes in weaving, spinning, printing fabric and dying handspun fibers. Six years later she moved to the Annapolis area and started teaching Fine Arts at Maryland Hall, the Easton Academy of Art, and Peabody Outreach Programs. For the past 30 years, Andrea continues to instruct throughout the year.

Classes include: Drawing, Pastel, and Acrylic Painting for Adults. These classes include both Realist and Abstract styles, beginning to intermediate levels. Children’s classes include both Realist and Abstract styles, beginning to intermediate levels. Children’s classes include: Drawing, Painting, and Fashion Design, for ages 6-16, beginning to advanced. She also teaches Private Lessons for ages 6-years-old to adults, in your home, and schedules sessions to critique your work.

Along with teaching at Maryland Hall, she was an “Artist in Residence” for nine years, worked on the Visual Arts Committee, and Curator of the “Main Hall Gallery” for several years. From 2005-2010 she volunteered as a Co-Chair of the Membership Committee for the Maryland Federation of Art, and in 2010 was elected as President of the Board, for two years. Andrea works from her home studio, near the Chesapeake Bay. Her work is included in private collections in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., New York, and Iowa. Andrea was commissioned by members of the “National Organization of Women” to create an enamel cloisonné lapel pin that was accepted into the Women’s History Division of the Smithsonian Institute.

Andrea Olney-Wall’s current projects include offering a greater selection of private classes, teaching International Workshops, and completing a series of educational books of Art Instructions in Drawing, Painting and Pastels.

    This Workshop combines working sketches for Acrylc paintings. Students will draw images for their paintings to scale, using several techniques and materials to complete several 11"X14" canvas board paintings. Students may select their subjects, using objects and photos they bring from home, or use my stock photos to complete their work. Any style of painting is acceptable.     This class is considered an Intermediate Level Class. Beginners may register if they have had the Workshop, Introduction to Soft Pastels, in January 2022. Students taking the Pastel Painting class will have a lecture or demonstration at the beginning of each class. This information period will cover advanced techniques such as creating colored grounds, how to enlarge or reduce your image, using fixative on your work, matting suggestions, how to fix mistakes, how to make your own colors from what you have on hand, and how to transport and store your painting. Students will work on one painting per class for the first 4 weeks trying out different styles and techniques such as realism in a still life, abstraction of a landscape, wet and dry work, and a red acrylic ground. The last two classes will be spent on finishing all your paintings and/or creating one oversized piece of work.Students should have their own set of pastels, and their own papers to work on. I suggest a pastel set larger than 12, and several paper types and sizes. Included in the Studio fee are pastel pencils, brushes, backing boards, sponges, tapes, fixatives, extra pastel color sets for colors you may not have. Materials fee $55.     Acrylic Painting II will start with a color mixing session. Students will work with the colors in their own personal subject, this may include photos, objects, calendar covers, book covers, etc. Please bring several images to class. No portraits or Human figures, I do not have the full color spectrum for skin tones. Students will be able to work with a variety of Acrylic mediums to understand when to use retarders to slow the drying time, and help with blending, sculpting gels for texture, as well as finishing surfaces for protection.     This 6 week Workshop begins with a personal critique of your work. Please bring in 5-10 pieces of work that you have done within the last year. All mediums welcome. This class will require your participation in “Home Studio” work of about 30 minutes on a weekly basis. This is a working studio setting. Students should bring to class: all materials to start a new project; paints, drawing tools, canvas, paper, pastels, fiber arts materials, photos,etc. Include projects that are already started that need to be finished.     Open Studio is a space for students to work individually or with assistance as needed for critiques and technique applications for 5 weeks. . The studio offers large tables, easels, spot lights and fabrics for still life and figure studies. Models for figure studies must be aquired and paid for, independently, by the Student working with them. Tools for prep work to finishing techniques such as matting and framing, staple and point guns screw drivers, paper cutters are also available. Students may work in any medium listed. Pre-requsite: Students must have beginning or intermediate level experience in drawing, painting, or pastel and be able to work on their own. A studio fee of $6 to the instructor at the first class. Students must provide their own materials and subjects. Detailed information will be sent upon registration. The instructor is available to help with painting, drawing and pastel concerning techniques, use of materials and problem solving. This is a non-instructional class and students work independently or in small groups. Materials Fee of $6 will be due on the first day. All additional materials, including cleanup materials, are to be supplied by the student. Tools may be used in studio only under instructor supervision.
