Andrea’s professional career in Fine Art began soon after she graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Art with a BFA in Painting, minoring in Drawing, Sculpture and Textiles. Opening a textile supply store and Gallery in Iowa City, Ia., she and a colleague began teaching Fiber Arts classes in weaving, spinning, printing fabric and dying handspun fibers. Six years later she moved to the Annapolis area and started teaching Fine Arts at Maryland Hall, the Easton Academy of Art, and Peabody Outreach Programs. For the past 30 years, Andrea continues to instruct throughout the year.

Classes include: Drawing, Pastel, and Acrylic Painting for Adults. These classes include both Realist and Abstract styles, beginning to intermediate levels. Children’s classes include both Realist and Abstract styles, beginning to intermediate levels. Children’s classes include: Drawing, Painting, and Fashion Design, for ages 6-16, beginning to advanced. She also teaches Private Lessons for ages 6-years-old to adults, in your home, and schedules sessions to critique your work.

Along with teaching at Maryland Hall, she was an “Artist in Residence” for nine years, worked on the Visual Arts Committee, and Curator of the “Main Hall Gallery” for several years. From 2005-2010 she volunteered as a Co-Chair of the Membership Committee for the Maryland Federation of Art, and in 2010 was elected as President of the Board, for two years. Andrea works from her home studio, near the Chesapeake Bay. Her work is included in private collections in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., New York, and Iowa. Andrea was commissioned by members of the “National Organization of Women” to create an enamel cloisonné lapel pin that was accepted into the Women’s History Division of the Smithsonian Institute.

    Intro to Abstract Painting begins with several excercises to highten creativity, while working with color, new techniques and materials. Every class starts with a new technique. We build upon this foundation and work up to a final finished canvas. We will be working in Acrylic paints, mediums and various surfaces. A apron is advised.     This workshop starts with techniques and materials commonly used by professional artists. Each day we will work with a new material including assorted drawing pencils, charcoals, erasers, papers, and oil pastels. Subject matter will include animals, human faces and forms, still life settings, and landscapes. Techniques will include enlarging and reducing images, line, form, light and shadow, volume, through value studies. Students will have class time to draw subjects of their choice, using the techniques covered in class. Please bring several photos and items to class with you on the first day of things that you would like to draw. This can include objects such as photos, action figures, animated figures, or just ideas that you would like to put on paper.     This workshop is for beginner to intermediate young painters. Class starts working with the color wheel, mixing the paint color students want for completing several paintings on canvas board. We will use transfer and free hand techniques. Students may bring photos for subjects matter and may include animals, action figures, cartoons, pets, vacation post cards etc. No portraits please. Students will learn how to create brush strokes with several types of brushes using acrylic paints and finishing mediums.     This new summer workshop will give the students a chance to start with drawing materials to set up a still life, landscape, or favorite animal from photos or objects from home. We will then work on a painting in Acrylics to finish out the class. All drawings and the painting will go home the last day of class.     Students taking this workshop will be using quality studio grade materials and streched canvas to create a painting of their choice and subject matter. Students should bring several photos or objects of their choice to the first class to select a subject for a final painting. We will start with paper to size the project and create several thumb nail sketches for our studies and proceed to the easel to paint. Students will try several brush types as well as a variety of mediums for effects with acrylic paints. All styles of painting will be acceptable from realism to abstract, depending on the student's choice of subject matter for their work.     Students in this class will have a chance to use quality, studio grade artist materials to create several final drawings of numerous subjects, including still life settings, exotic animals, and dynamic landscapes. Value studies, composition, shadow and light along with line and form studies will help young artists progress on a daily basis.     This class inspires children to discover new ways of drawing everyday subjects. We will explore the differences between 2D and 3D objects, natural lighting from sunny to cloudy days, how to make fruit look like fruit and not a vegetable and how to draw humans and animals of all sorts.     This fun painting class will start with learning all about colors, using the color wheel and mixing paints. We will move on to different types of painting; water color pencils, and acrylics.     This is not your traditional drawing class. Many students get caught up trying to duplicate a photo, a realistic bowl of fruit or a portrait mirror image. This class will loosen the strings and set aside the rules of drawing.     The Great Enviro Wall is a painting experience for intermediate students from 12-16 years of age. Students will begin with a photo of their subject and learn to enlarge their photo to a canvas, that is 4'X6' large. Next, we practice mixing all the colors necessary to complete the painting. Students will work on their oversized canvas over the course of five days, and have an Art Show at the end of the class. Subject matter may be something like a Super Hero in action, a Family of Lions on the Savannah, a Castle in Ireland, Monarch Butterflies resting in the branches in Mexico, or Buffalo on the Plains. What we want to accomplish, is a story of Our Environment, Our Earth. Students should bring a lunch/several snacks, and old clothes. Three hours can be a long day of painting. The materials fee for this class is $65.00, cash only, please, due the first day of class.
