Freedom Way Exhibition

First Floor Hallway Gallery | February 1- 28, 2023

Maryland Hall will host a presentation of the exhibit Freedom Way: A Blueprint of African American Resistance and Liberation in the United States, created and narrated by Bishop Craig Coates, a local pastor, and historian. Freedom Way is a music and art collection of boldly framed graphic posters, each depicting words and pictures some of the many milestones and inhumanities experienced by Black people on the long road to freedom from enslavement. The 24-board collection, a kind of pop-up museum, helps set a historical marker for Juneteenth and explains why the national holiday was being observed.

From encapture to policy and systemic racism, from restorative justice to reparations, Dr. Coates highlights critical moments in American history and the ever-expanding blueprint for Black liberation.

Following the narrated presentation, attendees can visit the exhibition on the first floor hallway gallery.

A "meet-the-artist" reception will be held in the Bowen Theatre at 4:00 pm - Registration is required.
