Glass, Mosaics and Metals

Make a copper bowl in this one evening class. Annealing, sinking, planishing, metal coloring, and tinning will be demonstrated and practiced. This class is a good introduction to basic metalsmithing techniques used to make functional tableware. Learn how to construct the base concrete orb used to make the mosaic garden orbs as seen on the instructor’s website BorgesMosaicStudio.com. These exterior orbs are made to withstand freeze/thaw conditions. You can then complete the mosaic portion of your project in one of the open mosaic studio sessions or on your own. The techniques learned can be used to make other outdoor creations for your garden. A material fee of $45, to include Styrofoam orb, fiberglass mesh, pvc pipe and mortar will be due to the instructor at the beginning of class.
The project does not include the mosaics; your finished class project will be the concrete orb without paint or mosaics.

Topics will include: What kiln is best for you, where to locate your kiln, how kilns work, basic maintenance, formulating firing schedules, troubleshooting problems and more. Introduction to Bookbinding Workshop

This class provides an introduction to the basics of booking and don’t worry…. I have all the supplies you will need for class. Materials and equipment used to make art books will be discussed and demonstrated. Our class project will be a Japanese Stab Binding and we will use decorative Washi papers for our covers. There is a materials fee of $7 due to the instructor for this class. In this one-day workshop, learn how to make a silk painting scarf by using the basic Serti French Method technique. How to stretch the silk, pin it on a wooden frame. Draw your own design, be abstract, or use the instructor’s drawings. Use the resist technique of rubber barriers to prevent the paint from travelling. How to mix colors with paints.  Alter the paints by using water, alcohol, salt.  How to set the paints permanently. Materials are all included, except the wooden frame, which is to be returned to the instructor after the workshop is over. A supply fee of $55 is payable to the instructor at the class. This is a two-day workshop for intermediate students that have already worked with me. We will use the Serti method techniques on dyes which are completely different from the paints. Salt, alcohol , water will also be used differently in this process which will also have more detailed designs. Students will learn how to color the resist which is a very important part of silk painting.  Scarves will be steamed and mailed back to the students. Students in this class have a choice; either a scarf or a wall hanging. A material fee of $70 is payable to instructor at first class.  Everything is included except the wooden frame. A deposit of $ 10 for the frame will be required and will be refunded at the end of the workshop. Extra silk will be charged separately depending on the size. Learn classical and contemporary drawing techniques as you learn how to draw beautiful dogs. Referring to historic references and our photos, we will learn how to draw on toned papers with single and multicolor pencils, tri-color pencils, pen and ink, wash and ink, pastels and silverpoint. Instructor will provide prepared papers for each technique, but students will also prepare their own papers for future use. Finding shapes, developing textures, expanding light and shadows will help take this, or any artwork to a higher level. Also discover how to sketch dogs from life (it is possible), create mastercopies and practice boards. Investigating dog breeds and anatomy will strengthen skills and expand portfolios. Basic drawing skills would be helpful, but are not required. Please bring a sense of humor and some photos of your favorite dogs to the first class. Instructor will supply photos if needed.
