Biography

Sheila DeLaquil was born in western Pennsylvania, and studied biology in Massachusetts and California. When she moved to Annapolis almost 17 years ago, she began participating in local art exhibitions, competitions and art associations. A recent award was a first place at the Art League Gallery in Alexandria. Her paintings have won prizes at the Maryland Federation of Art, the Baltimore Watercolor Society’s exhibitions and at many other venues . Her art work has been shown at the offices of Premier Planning Group in Annapolis, the River Gallery in Galesville, St. Johns College, Quiet Waters Gallery, Anne Arundel Community College, the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society’s Aqueous Open, the International Society of Acrylic Painter’s Exhibition in Santa Cruz, California, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and many other locations. Sheila has co-owned an art gallery in Baltimore and has been a member of several artist-owned galleries.

Sheila usually works with water media on a variety of supports. Recently she’s been using mixed media including acrylics and watercolor crayons to create non-representational pieces. Sheila’s painting goal is to devise compositions that are original and exciting.

It’s the adventure of painting that inspires me to paint.

Artist Statement

I’m energized by the painting process and by responding to what happens on the painting surface.  I sometimes start working by laying down paint with no particular concept in mind and then work to create shapes, patterns, values, color relationships that are exciting to me. There may be two or a dozen layers of paint when I’m done. On other occasions, I may start a piece with a pre-conceived plan, but honestly, so much happens on the surface that I inevitably respond directly to what I see.

My current series is titled “Problem Solving.” In this series, I’m working on small sets of paintings, and will often start 4 pieces at the same time. The starts are where the ideas begin. From there I make lots of decisions about the elements of design, and the overall feel of the work. When the pieces are nearing completion, I study them and think about how they relate to each other. Should they stand alone or together? So, this is what I’ve been creating. I’ve been enjoying the challenge!
